Simone Cicero | Platform Design | Civic Design Course 2018

The next guest of our Civic Design Course will connect with us from Rome (Italy). We will be with Simone Cicero: self-starter, strategist, product and service designer interested in co-design, design thinking and innovation.

The session will take place on December 12 at 18h (GMT+1).

Simone investigates the reasons behind change, correlates things and understands to design relevant and consistent strategies and products. Is a blogger and public speaker: most often he talks about innovation, disruption, resilience and ecosystems. He loves hack society being Ouishare Italian connector (see ouishare.net)

He created the Platform Design Toolkit: to help organizations of all kinds create shaping strategies, leveraging ecosystems, transforming themselves and the world in the process. Since its introduction, the elements composing the toolkit have been the most widely used design tools, by designers and strategic thinkers all over the world, to deal with platform thinking: empower ecosystems beyond the customer narrative of the industrial age.

SIlvia Tagliazucchi | Civic Design Course 2018

The next guest of our Civic Design Course will connect with us from Modena (Italy). We will be with Silvia Tagliazucchi: Architect, civic designer, project and community manager PhD at the University of Bologna in Urban Morphology.

The session will take place on November 27th at 19h (GMT+1).

Silvia Tagliazucchi is an architect with a strong focus on the study of the relationship between people and architecture, and how the physical and qualitative dimension of spaces influence human well-being. She carries out such researches both on the academic side – lecturer and visiting professor at the University of Ferrara – and through practical applications in participatory projects both in Italy and Europe. From 2017 she has been working in the association Amigdala as community and project manager for the Civic Factory OvestLab.

Primavera De Filippi | Civic Design Course 2018

:Here we are. We start with streaming sessions with special guests from the online civic design course. These sessions are designed and developed for the course participants, but they are open for anyone to see online.

We started with a super guest, it’s Primavera De Filippi (@yaoeo). The session will take place on Thursday 8 November at 19h (Madrid time GMT +1).

Primavera De Filippi is a permanent researcher at the National Center of Scientific Research (CNRS) in Paris, a faculty associate at the Berkman-Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, and a Visiting Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute.

She is a member of the Global Future Council on Blockchain Technologies at the World Economic Forum, and co-founder of the Internet Governance Forum’s dynamic coalitions on Blockchain Technology (COALA). Her fields of interest focus on legal challenges raised by decentralized technologies, with a particular focus on blockchain technologies.

She is investigating the new opportunities for these technologies to enable new governance models and participatory decision-making through the concept of governance-by-design. Her book, “Blockchain and the Law,” was published in 2018 by Harvard University Press (co-authored with Aaron Wright).

Get two books at a very special price

On the occasion of the crowdfunding campaign of the Civic Design Book we want to highlight and meet again the first CivicWise book: Civic Practices Book. The Civic Practices Book

The objective of Civic Practices was to contribute to the compilation of initiatives, demands, campaigns, actions, projects, research, methodologies, participatory and co-design processes that are being carried out around the world to create communities of civic practice. Thus creating a new imaginary of new forms of relationship and collective construction from the collective intelligence situated.
But what does it mean to be situated? They are projects or ideas that arise in a particular environment, so they respect and adapt to local realities.
In its four chapters: Civic Spaces, Methodologies, Research and Actions, the book brings together 90 contributions from 40 different cities, in their original language, created collaboratively, thanks to the many connections and encounters, both digital and physical.

The Civic Design Book

Two years later, the Civic Innovation School, part of the CivicWise community, launches a new book called Civic Design Book, a book created from the work of 500 participants of the Civic Design Course. A course that experiences a new way of conceiving the academic environment, based on horizontality, co-creation, mutual respect and the putting into practice of all these values in the community in which we live. The form of digital connection allowed the distance to be shortened and people from all over the world to work together, get to know each other and exchange experiences.

Open Call: Connector Network

We are looking for passionate, curious and active people to be local connectors for the Civic Innovation School. We want to create a distributed network of collaborators, with the aim of representing, supporting, disseminating and promoting projects and activities in a decentralized manner.

What is the Civic Innovation School?
The CIS is an international institution structured as a distributed network that promotes collaborative learning environments focused on civic innovation, collective intelligence, open design and civic empowerment.

Why are we looking for connectors?
The connectors allow the international network to be connected to the local dimension, that is to say to the daily realities of the territories, thus situating global learning and generating new connections and synergies between global and local actors. Building a glocal network allows for two-way learning and a horizontal exchange of knowledge and experiences.

What are the benefits of a CIS connector?
First of all, it is important to clarify that this is an experiment and that in no way should the role of the connector be understood as a job, neither employee nor volunteer. We are proposing the possibility of generating a network of people who want to live first-hand the creation of a project that they can feel as their own and can replicate and enrich locally.
As we know that in any case it will be a question of putting in hours, the selected connectors will be able to count on an important return that is the possibility of participating for free in the next edition of the Civic Design course scheduled for October of this year.

How many people are selected?
At the moment we are thinking of selecting 12 people. We would like these people to be naturally distributed in different cities and countries.

What role/responsibility does a CIS connector have?
Promote and disseminate the focus, values and learning of the CIS network.
Create synergies between local actors: citizens, public, private and academic sectors.
Organize possible physical meetings in the territory.
Monthly update meetings.
Create possible contact sheets.
Monitoring and coordination of digital communication channels, to allow a smooth connection between the different agents (slack tool)

Selection process
The call is open until 17th August.
On August 24th we will publish a list of pre-selected candidates
From 24th August to 4th September we will conduct an individual interview with the shortlisted candidates.
On September 10th we will announce the 12 selected.

From Civic Innovation School we launched the second Civic Marathon, it will be a marathon of 15 days to discover and map people and projects focused on Civic Innovation: they can be people, groups, spaces, actions, strategies, projects and research.

Two years ago we dared to launch the first Civic Marathon. It was a campaign to learn about new projects of Civic Innovation that ended with a live streaming that lasted more than 4 hours with participants from different countries in Europe and Latin America. In the streaming we were continuously changing the language depending on the person presenting your project.

Two years later we want to repeat this campaign again. It will also be the opportunity to present the Civic Innovation School, the next edition of the Civic Design course and the crowdfunding of the Civic Design Book.

We will close the campaign with a streaming session scheduled for Thursday 9th August at 6pm (GMT+2).

How can you participate?
